I haven’t even left the country yet and already my first aid kit has been put to good use. This past weekend we had a family get together and some aggressive wasps on my parents’ deck decided to spoil the party. We were enjoying the nice weather and good company. The wasps were busy building a nest under the deck fence posts. Enter my seven year old jokester of a nephew. He innocently props his chair back on two legs, bumps the fence post, and out fly two wasps. One lands on his elbow. He notices it and two things happen simultaneously: first, he remarks “Oh, a wasp”. Second, sting. What ensues is some screaming and some pain. Everyone hurries inside except my dad and myself. It is up to us to exact revenge on said wasps. My dad first peeks under the fence post for the location of the nest. Out zooms another wasp with a bead on my dad. Boom. Another sting. This time on my dad’s arm. Two direct hits in less than two minutes. It occurs to me that these might be professional special operation wasps ready to do precision surgical strikes at will. My dad and I retreat inside to regroup and replan.
A few minutes later I remember my first aid kit has some sting relief medicated pads. I grab it and we apply the medication to the injured. After we get things settled down with my nephew we split into two groups. My dad heads out to buy some wasp killer spray and retaliate against these elite special ops commando wasps. My nephew and my brothers head down to the basement to play Mario Kart Wii. Some sting relief medication and a few rounds of Mario Kart and all is well again.
The wasps and nests are gone now too.
