First off, I love street stands in Thailand. Cheap, amazing food at every corner means it is a backpacker’s paradise. However, I can’t remember what the fruit is pictured above. Is it dragonfruit? Somebody please tell me!
OK, now for a quick street stand story. I love love love the stands that sell chicken on a stick. However, I didn’t realize that all the different sticks were different parts of the chicken. There were three different sticks, two that were a light brown color and one that was a dark brown color. I bought all three early on in my time in Bangkok, and while the light-colored sticks were good, the dark colored stick was…less than desirable. I didn’t know at the time that they were all chicken. I assumed one was chicken, one might be fish, and the other might be steak. The dark substance on the stick tasted…mushy, not solid like meat. It had a weird yogurt like texture when you tasted and chewed it. I later found out from my favorite street stand lady who was located right outside my hostel that each stick represents a part of the chiken. She pointed at herself as I asked which part. The arms and legs for the first, the breast and back for the second, and…the stomach for the third, now very undesirable, piece of chicken. Yes, I was eating chicken intestines or chicken liver or something akin to that.
No, I will not try it again for the benefit of my readers.

Yes it is Dragonfruit. You are a braver man than I am Brian. I would have asked about the meat before buying it. Glad to see you haven’t been affected by the flooding.

Thanks Thomas. Sometimes you just have to dive in and try something and ask questions later. Otherwise you won’t have the nerve to try something or do something once you are told what it actually consists of!

Now you know what the bait that me and Peters use to go Catfishing tastes like! HAHA that’s awesome!
briancretin says
Nasty nasty nasty nasty.
Maggie Carlton says
YUCK! Intestines, Liver!! I am gland you are trying new things Brian! Your next outlook when you go fishing is you know you won’t catch any catfish cause they won’t like it either!!
briancretin says
Yeah plus I’m not sure I can eat catfish now knowing that they eat that!
Laura Livingston says
THAT’s what that was?!?? Gross…and funny. Well, guess I can add that to the list of weird things I’ve eaten over here 🙂
briancretin says
Yep, if nothing else then it is definitely worth a good story.
Angie says
You should have chased the chicken parts with some dragonfruit, it’s good stuff!
briancretin says
I agree with that! Dragonfruit rocks!
