The Maimun Palace in Medan, Indonesia, casts an air of elegance yet creeping decay. Plaster peels from some of the walls and pictures adorning the walls seem to be leftover remnants as opposed to proud reflections of the past. Yet occupying one end of the great hall is a luxurious cushioned seating area, raised up on a dais and bedecked with curtains that are off-white yet seem to glow a shade of yellow or gold due to the rest of the interior’s decorations. The architecture is beautiful, in a stately yet slowly faded dignity sort of way.
