The concept of The Faces Series materialized during my time at Borobudur temple just outside of Jogjakarta, Indonesia. What started as a peaceful exploration of the temple complex quickly turned into a photo session with local school children. The school children had come to the temple on a field trip, and upon noticing a Westerner speaking English began practicing their English homework and taking pictures with me. After some time I turned my camera on them, and the resulting photos were an unexpected surprise. Some pictures reminded me of my middle school yearbook pictures. Others seemed to speak a story all their own. The idea solidified in my head by the time I had left the temple, and the next day I wandered the streets of Jogjakarta snapping pictures of local residents (with their permission). What follows is the first in what I hope to be a series of posts.
The Faces Series – School Children at Borobudur:

I love this idea!

I know – I like it too. Hopefully I will continue to improve with my photography so the pictures can get better but I like the idea even if the pictures aren’t world-class.
Curtis Cretin says
At least somebody follows American sports over there — I saw what I believe to be a New York Yankees hat. Have you seen any Dallas Cowboys hats yet overseas?
briancretin says
Sorry – no Cowboys hats. No NFL paraphernalia of any kind, actually.
Aaron says
Cool project. I am excited to see how your pictures change as you get more practice as a photographer.
briancretin says
Me too.
Karen says
Great idea, Brian! And look how kids pose the same way all over the world…see pics of our kids & cousins at Christmas on FB. Word!
briancretin says
That’s what struck out to me as well Karen! Half way around the world and the poses can still be almost identical.
