A stand in Jogjakarta, Indonesia sells that huge, odoriferous fruit that looks like a pufferfish called durian. Most people either love it or hate it. When I first tried it, I was indecisive, and it took about five bites for me to slowly make my decision. With the first three bites, I wasn’t sure, but by the fourth and fifth taste I had decided I hated it. The pungent fragrance, which is so overpowering the fruit can be smelled from a long distance, is outlawed on public transport in Thailand. For that, I am thankful. However, it is not illegal to have it as a carry-on in flights, and for that I am not thankful. I have unpleasant olfactory memories of my flights around Indonesia being invaded by that overwhelming stench wafting through the airplane cabin.
