The Banaue Rice Terraces in the northern Philippines offers an amazing mix of mountains, villages, and terraced rice fields. I have seen more than my fair share of rice fields throughout all of SouthEast Asia, and my favorite exists right here in Banaue. The climate is hot and muggy, the walking is strenuous, but the payoff in panoramic views is all worth it.

Fun facts to know and tell; did you know it was an Iowan engineer who “discovered” the Banaue Rice Terraces and influential in the area becoming known worldwide which lead to its present tourist destination status? It was featured in a documentary film; he married a local Ifugao woman in the the 1920s or before. Can’t find any more details using google but maybe you’ll be able to find them.

Wow – I had no idea – that is really interesting. I did a quick Google search but wasn’t able to find anything right away. I’ll continue to look though…

Bill, that’s great to hear. I started traveling again this January. I have been staying in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, working remotely for a web development company in Chicago. I will be back in the US from May until August, and then I think I will be in Europe from August until Thanksgiving. I would definitely like to meet up and you are absolutely welcome to a BBQ and some corn on the cob when you come visit!
