A tomb overlooks the Banaue rice terraces as visitors traverse the small footpaths separating each terrace. These rice terraces cast an imposing, dominant figure all along the mountainside and around the villages. A river meanders at the base of the hills, its fast current cutting a swath through the mountains, and the villages are more or less aligned along its path. It was planting time so most of the rice paddies here are flooded with fresh rice shoots sprouting up. The hostel I stayed at is on the other side of the hill, exactly opposite from where I took this picture. Imagine sipping coffee or tea as the sun rises and sets over these terraces and mountains, and you can quickly understand the power this place holds over you and the urge to stay for just one more day.
