“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road
In my opinion, there is nothing better for the soul than a road trip across the USA. The feeling of the open road ahead of you, changing landscapes, sweeping vistas, and this summer, for me at least, chasing the sunset. I was headed west, to Oregon. For a span of three months the road and I became compatriots, together tackling challenges and harnessing creativity. As the miles swept by under the car tires, my plan to visit multiple national parks came to fruition. Working on the road, camping under the stars, hiking along paths that hugged streams or revealed meadows. This was my life. My summer. My essential being for twelve weeks. Along the way I reunited with my old friends Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah, Nevada, and California. I became acquainted with my new friends Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Surprises awaited me, but so did old dreams long awaiting to be fulfilled. A quintessential road trip across the USA is still my favorite form of travel. Above all others, it rests at the top of the list. I am already eagerly anticipating my next road trip.
Below are a small selection of pictures I feel match the spirit of “the open road”.

Great photos and regardless of the downsides of life in the more populated area of the USA the open road, incredible variety of landscapes and feeling of freedom in rural USA can not be matched anywhere in the world. P.S. Andy Graham from Indiana of the hobo traveler blog is also in Romania at the moment so maybe your paths will cross.
